Junior Garden Club
In 1926 when the Columbia Garden Club was organized, members sponsored the Junior Garden Club for boy and girl members at least 10 years of age, in the 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Junior members meet monthly for educational projects, including community service, conservation and horticulture. The coordinator also encourages participation in youth-oriented projects of the Garden Club of South Carolina, such as art and writing contests.
A recent Junior project was decorating the Governor’s Mansion “bird tree” located outside the mansion dining room. Junior members created unique and attractive, edible ornaments to be enjoyed by the birds through all seasons.
During Halloween, Junior members’ themed projects included horticulture and container gardening as they prepared pumpkins for planting pansies, and then delivered their pansied pumpkins to American Red Cross donors and staff.
